Kirkwood Greentree Festival - September 16-18, 2022

The Kirkwood Greentree Festival began in 1961. John F. Kennedy was President, the Berlin Wall was constructed, Gary Player won the Master’s and hula hoops were the rage. In Kirkwood, Bill Pfitzinger was Mayor and we were all starting Sixth grade. Kirkwood was recovering from a long period of drought; Dutch Elm disease had taken a toll on some of the city’s beautiful trees. The Greentree Festival’s creation actually came about as a way to replace drought-stricken trees. The city offered a variety of trees for just $1 each. Thousands of these trees were purchased and planted and to this day, many still flourish, lining a number of Kirkwood streets. In fact, trees continue to be an important part of the annual Greentree Festival. The Boy Scouts still give away hundreds of tree seedlings each year at the festival. The festival gets better each and every year, to the joy of thousands of residents and visitors coming to Kirkwood Park for the event. There has always been a parade, a dog show, service clubs and organization-sponsored booths, good food, and family fun. Another big draw is the Motown Review performance that typically kicks off the festival. Won’t you join us?

Kirkwood School District Inducts Honorees into the Outstanding Alumni Hall of Fame

Every five years the Kirkwood School District inducts Honorees into the Outstanding Alumni Hall of Fame and Athletic Hall of Fame. The last event was held in October 2019, with a full weekend of activities to celebrate the event. The inductees were invited to KHS to connect with current students. The inductees shared their stories and professional journeys with students. Inductees included, from our own, KHS Class of ’67… Margaret Wolf Freivogel, Bill Freivogel and Rick Stream. At the ceremony, each inductee was presented with a “Crystal K” award. Congrats Margie, Bill and Rick!
